More recent generations may have heard the 1982 Taco recording or the “Young Frankenstein” film version of this Irving Berlin tune, but it was Harry Richman who first made it famous, both on record and as star of the 1930 film “Puttin’ On The Ritz.” If you’re not familiar with the earlier recordings of the song, you’ll note that Berlin’s original lyrics were all about Harlem. His updated 1946 words shifted the setting to Park Avenue and added the Gary Cooper reference.CD audio, originally issued on 78rpm: Brunswick 4677 - Puttin’ On The Ritz (Berlin) by Harry Richman, with Earl Burtnett and His Los Angeles Biltmore Orchestra, recorded in Los Angeles December 1929THE 1930 HITS ARCHIVE - a collection of commercial recordings and songs that proved popular during the calendar year 1930 (some were recorded in 1929) via sales, sheet music, and radio exposure.…plus some others that have gained increased recognition or have been shown to have had an impact during the decades that followed.
